History of Budaun, Uttar Pradesh

Budaun (बदायूं) is holy land of Great Sufi Saint's, Auliya, Wali and Peer's as well as a place of izarat's. It is very holi place in the India. According to Prof. Goti John this city was named "BEDAMOOTH" (बेदामूथ) in an ancient inscription (stone writeup, शिलालेख) which is now in Lucknow Musium. In that Period this pradesh was known as PANCHAL (पांचाल). According to a line of that Stone Writeup there was a village "BHADAUNLAK" near it. Muslim Historian (इतिहासकार) Mr. Roz Khan Lodhi said that King Ashoka Built a Buddh Vihar & Quila (किला) and he named it BuddhMau (बुद्धमउ).

Budaun is quite an old city of the Rohilkhand region in the state of Uttar Pradesh, near Delhi in India. It holds an important position due to its historical, scholarly, literary, and spiritual roots. Muslims arrived in Budaun in the 12th Century. In 1202 (599 Hijri), Qutubuddin Aibak conquered Budaun and thereafter, the city came to known as a centre for Islamic knowledge, spirituality and literature. Budaun has the honour of being the abode of Sultan-al-Mashaikh Mehboobe Ilaahi Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya Budauni (Dehlvi), the renowned historian from Akbar's time Mulla Abdul Qadir Budauni, Sultan-al-Aarifin Khwaja Hasan Sheikh Shahi, Khwaja Badruddin Abu Bakr Mu-e-Tab, Hazrat Sharafuddin Aala Uqbahi, Sheikh Shahabuddin Mahmara, Khwaja Ziauddin Nakhshabi and Hazrat Ameer Hasan Sizji – may Allah have mercy on them all. It is because of this spiritual and wisdom-filled environment that Hazrat Ameer Khusro (may Allah have mercy on him) has prescribed using the dust of Budaun instead of collyrium (surma) to cool the eyes. History books have referred to this famous city as the City of Saints (Madinat-ul-Auliya). Numerous martyrs are laid to rest in this hallowed city.

Budaun came under the British rule in 1801 and remained with them until India's independence in 1947.
